"I suppose never having studied art (and only started late in life), my approach to a subject is rather head-on. I paint what I see.
My background colours usually reflect the mood of the environment around me - when it's cold and stormy, I go for blues, greys and ochre's. When it's quiet and bright my palette is basically white.
I'm not big on colour. I am more aware of light/shade and texture; how things feel to the touch. (Although I do believe every painting should have in it the tiniest touch of yellow... just to let the sunshine in.)
My main aim is to try and capture the essence of the subject, be it the smooth simplicity of an arum or the textured complexity of lavender.
In a nutshell, my work is simple, quiet and uncluttered."
Annette lived and worked in Johannesburg for many years, painting only on commission. She moved to Hermanus in 1995 where she now paints full time from her studio at home. She owned her own gallery for two years from where she worked as well. She found, however, that she couldn't give all her attention to her work with the amount of people frequenting the gallery, so she moved her studio back home. Her work sells extensively in both nationally and internationally.
